The grand residence of the British Royal Family
Regally sat in the City of Westminster, a borough of London, you’ll surely recognise one of the most iconic British landmarks, Buckingham Palace. The palace has been the official London residence of British sovereigns since 1837 and still is today.
You won’t want to miss a visit for a taste of British history, art and royal culture.
Royals have ruled from here since 1531, with a large portion of the current building constructed in 1703. Previously known as Buckingham House, you’ll see the building has changed a lot in the last 300 years.
Buckingham House was a large, three-floor main house with two smaller service wings. Although a regal home, in 1847, Queen Victoria chose to renovate after deciding the house was too small for her growing family.
This was when the “public face” of Buckingham Palace was built, containing the famous balcony. This is where the Royal Family stands to acknowledge crowds after special occasions.
Marvel at the grand palace from outside the gates and watch the famous “Changing of the Guard” ceremony. This is where the Old Guard hands over the responsibility of protecting the palace to the New Guard. You’ll recognise their iconic bright red tunics and tall black bearskin caps.
If you’re looking for more in-depth access to Buckingham Palace, you can book a tour. This way, you’ll see a selection of the 775 grand rooms and learn about British royal history. Picture bright golden ceilings, glittering chandeliers and impressive art collections.
