Charming town and serene lake
Buttermere is a lake and tiny village of the same name located in northwest England. You’ll find Buttermere peacefully tucked away in a picture-perfect valley in the Lake District. With just over 100 residents, this community has a more relaxed feel when compared to the nearby town of Keswick.
Although the village is small, there’s still a selection of eateries to choose from for a traditional English lunch.
The lake’s name is fitting, because Buttermere means ‘the lake by the dairy pastures’. You’ll be drawn in by the beautiful setting Buttermere is so famous for. The lake itself is nestled among the Northern Fells, a striking mountain range.
You can choose from one of the many footpaths that wind across the area for a peaceful walk. Some routes gently hug the side of the lake for an easy saunter, while others take you up the mountains.
Charming atmosphere aside, much of the attraction here is in the drive itself. Following the Honister Pass from Keswick, the road twists and turns around hairpin turns. You’ll climb up to 1,167 feet (356 metres) on gradients of up to 25%. The views will certainly be worth it!
