Vibrant cities, ancient history and peaceful nature

England is the largest of the three countries in Great Britain. It’s known for its long and influential history, as well as for charming natural beauty and vibrant contemporary culture. Picture yourself travelling between the world-renowned capital city, London, and quaint villages nestled amongst lush green countryside.

The origins of England date back thousands of years. It’s been ruled by many different empires and dynasties. You’ll be able to discover vivid history here, from prehistoric Stonehenge to Roman-built Hadrian’s Wall and thousands of castles and forts. The Royal Family still live in spectacular palaces across the land.

England boasts many bustling metropolises, with London being the largest. But don’t miss Bristol, Liverpool and Manchester. These destinations are known for their music history and sporting prowess. Many places in England are also incredibly well-preserved, like the medieval walled city of York and the Georgian spa town of Bath.

Between diverse cities, make sure to immerse yourself in some national parks. Explore winding valleys in the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales. Then, traverse the mountainous Lake District. Each region is dotted with picturesque villages, some built with special local stone, like the honey-gold towns of the Cotswolds.

England is relatively small, but it has many distinct regions. You’ll find that accents can change a lot from one town to the next. Listen out for London cockney slang, the soft tones of the West Country and the warm Yorkshire brogue. Both Newcastle and Liverpool have famous local dialects.

You’ll want to taste some traditional food here, popular with the English for centuries. During your journey you’ll find endless pubs to choose from, with each village offering at least one. Make sure to try a full English breakfast, fish and chips, an afternoon cream tea and a Sunday roast dinner.

Across the country, there are also many modern and international restaurants on offer. A lot of experimental cuisine starts out here, and in the bigger cities – especially London – you’ll be able to try one-of-a-kind eateries. Make sure to wash down all this delicious food with some locally brewed beers!
