Iconic cathedral in central London
As you explore central London, you’re sure to spot the famous dome of St Paul’s Cathedral on the skyline. This magnificent church is one of the city’s, and the country’s, most beloved landmarks. It’s well worth a visit on your London adventure.
The site of St Paul’s is believed to have had religious importance since Roman times, when London was called “Londinium”. The current cathedral, though, was built in the late 17th century and took 35 years to complete.
You’ll find the church on Ludgate Hill, in the City of London, amongst skyscrapers. Its impressive dome is one of the highest of its kind in the world. The cathedral is a cultural landmark as well as a historic one, as many important British events have taken place here.
If you choose to visit, you’ll be walking in the footsteps of royals, prime ministers and other significant personalities. The current St Paul’s was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, an English architect, and is considered to be his masterpiece. He’s buried in the crypt here, alongside other famous figures.
Spend some time admiring the spectacular English Baroque interiors, and climb to the Golden Gallery for amazing city views. And don’t miss the Whispering Gallery, where you can murmur something on one side and be heard on the other.
