Mesmerising works of art
In London’s Trafalgar Square, don’t miss the famous National Gallery. This museum showcases some of the best of British and European art and history. Entry to the main exhibition is free, and there are often temporary collections. Tickets for paid exhibitions can be purchased online or from the front desk.
The original building dates back to 1838, and it overlooks the Trafalgar Square fountains and famous lion statues. In 1991, the postmodernist Sainsbury Wing was added to the gallery. After admiring the outside, head in to discover colourfully painted halls and rooms lined with art.
Here, you’ll see masterworks by artists like Botticelli, da Vinci, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Turner, Renoir and Van Gogh. Spread across different rooms and floors, there’s something in the gallery for everyone. As well as the beautiful paintings you can also enjoy the gallery’s café and gift shop.
Before or after your visit, make sure to spend some time seeing the sights of Trafalgar Square. The towering Nelson’s Column honours Admiral Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The Fourth Plinth is a trendy space that showcases a different modern art installation every few months.
