Famous bridge on the River Thames
Tower Bridge is a beautifully decorated suspension bridge in London which opens up to allow ships to pass through. It’s one of the most iconic sights in England’s capital, with its two elegant towers linked by blue-painted railings. At night, colourful LED lights highlight the bridge’s famous silhouette.
You can climb either tower for spectacular views of the London skyline, and explore walkways connecting the two. These suspended paths have glass floors, letting you look down on the cars and people below. You’ll be taking in the views from 42 feet (13 metres) above the River Thames.
When it was opened in 1894, it was the largest and greatest bridge of its kind in the world. It has two “bascules” (two halves of the centre of the bridge) which can be raised and lowered on command. At the time, steam power was used to open and close them.
Today, you can visit the engine rooms where steam was used to power the bridge’s movement for over 80 years. You’ll also be able to learn about the history of Tower Bridge and the people who have worked here.
