Iconic history and medieval beauty
One of London’s best-known attractions is the imposing Tower of London. Make sure to spend some time exploring it on your visit to England’s vibrant capital.
The Tower of London is officially a royal castle. Today, it’s best-known for housing the crown jewels and for its bloody past. It was originally built by the Normans in 1066 as a home for kings and queens, as well as to be a prison.
During the reigns of the Tudors, the Tower became best-known for the torture and execution of prisoners. People in medieval England feared being sent here. Many famous figures spent time locked in the Tower, including Queen Elizabeth I before she was crowned, and her mother, Anne Boleyn.
On your visit, you’ll learn about the Tower’s fascinating history. Discover the origins of the Royal Mint, where British currency is made, and be dazzled by the crown jewels. The Tower’s guards, known as “Beefeaters”, still wear traditional outfits and take care of the castle’s famous black ravens.
