Prehistoric burial mounds and cemetery

The Clava Cairns are a Bronze Age cemetery complex, including passage graves, ring cairns and standing stones that date back roughly 4,000 years. Located near Inverness on the River Nairn, this is one of Scotland’s most significant sacred prehistoric sites. The cairns are dominated by a line of three remarkably well-preserved burial cairns, each enclosed by stone circles, and little is known about the early builders but the alignment suggests that the sun may have been central to their beliefs.

The cairns are located in a beautiful wooded area, and for added mystique, it’s ideal to visit early in the morning or at sunset.
