The historic heart of Edinburgh
SEE HISTORY COME TO LIFE IN THE OLD TOWN OF EDINBURGH
The heart of Edinburgh is often said to be the Old Town. It's here that you'll find evidence of ancient and medieval history in Scotland's capital. From its architecture, design, statues, and more, you'll have plenty to discover.
The Old Town used to be the boundary of Edinburgh. You'll get a true sense of this small world walking along its winding alleyways and cobblestoned staircases. A walking tour is ideal to learn about the history of the people who inhabited the Old Town throughout the centuries.
At the top of Castle Rock, you'll find Edinburgh Castle. It is said that this spot has been occupied by people since the Iron Age. The castle is also where you can see the oldest building still standing in the capital, St Margaret’s Chapel.
Walk along the Royal Mile to admire the length of the Old Town. You’ll pass historic buildings like St Giles’ Cathedral, the High Court of Justice and Holyrood Palace at the bottom end of the street.
There are also plenty of attractions along this stretch, from the Real Mary King’s Close, Scottish Whisky Experience and various museums.
Together with the New Town, it makes up one of Scotland’s UNESCO World Heritage sites.
