Iconic castle near Skye
Eilean Donan Castle is perhaps one of the most iconic sites of Scotland. Located on Eilean Donan, a small tidal island at the meeting point of two lochs, Duich and Alsh, the castle was founded in the 13th century, but its involvement in the Jacobite rebellions saw it destroyed in 1719. The ruins were reconstructed by Lieutenant-General John Macrae-Gilstrap in the 20th century.
The castle is open to visitors that want to explore its many grand rooms, period furniture, Jacobean artefacts and displays of weapons and art.
