Britain’s best road trip
The North Coast 500, or NC500, is one of the most scenic drives in Scotland. In fact, many say it's the Scottish version of Route 66. It is a circular route around the northern coast of the Highlands, totalling just over 500 miles (830 kilometres).
It will take you from Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, up to John O'Groats and Dunnet Head, Scotland and the UK mainland's northernmost point. Then follow the north coast west to Durness, before coming back down through Ullapool and the mighty Applecross.
There are many sites to visit on the way, including the beautiful Smoo Cave, the largest and most dramatic sea cave in Britain. On a sunny day, pop by the pristine beaches and turquoise waters of Durness.
From Ullapool, you can sail across to the Inner or Outer Hebrides to see the isles of Lewis, Harris or Skye. After this scenic detour, continue your drive south on the mainland to enjoy views of rocky cliffs, gold sand beaches and beautiful mountains.
