Picturesque island with incredible beaches
If you have a free day while visiting North Wales, you could head to Anglesey, a picturesque island nestled off the west coast. It promises to be a delightful escape filled with natural beauty, rich history and charming attractions.
There are 2 bridges linking it with mainland Wales: the Britannia Bridge and the Menai Suspension Bridge. They are both impressive and easy to spot as you head towards the crossing.
One of the top sights to see on the island is Traeth Llanddwyn. This pristine sandy beach, set against a backdrop of pine forests, is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. On a sunny day, you’ll spot the peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) in the distance. From here, you could also walk to the tidal island Ynys Llanddwyn, which features some historical landmarks.
Don’t miss the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, featuring one of the longest place names in the world. Nearby, you’ll find Plas Newydd House and Gardens, an elegant waterfront mansion held by the National Trust. Or pop by Beaumaris Castle, a 13th-century fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To take in the great outdoors, you could spend the day on the trails of the Anglesey Coastal Path. It offers 130 miles (200 kilometres) of awe-inspiring views around the island's rugged coastline.
While on Anglesey, look out for red squirrels. The island is a stronghold for this species, the only native squirrel in the UK. Authorities here make great conservation efforts to keep the invasive grey squirrels away to protect the charming, rust-coloured mammals.
