Step into a different world
Portmeirion Village is a small theme park town in Gwynedd, North Wales. Situated on a private peninsula overlooking the coast, you’ll forget you’re even in Wales during your visit.
With its brightly coloured walls, central piazza and scenic surroundings, you’ll feel transported to the Italian Riviera. Here, you can dine at top restaurants, explore the surrounding woodlands and even relax in the small on-site spa.
You might recognise Portmeirion as the filming location of the 1960s TV series, The Prisoner.
Sir Clough Williams-Ellis began building Portmeirion in 1926, with the final additions finished in 1975. He wanted to create an ideal town that could be used as a blueprint for other towns. The aim was to show the Welsh community how to build upon a natural site without spoiling it.
Although other towns didn’t replicate his designs after all, this just makes Portmeirion feel one-of-a-kind and special.
To this day, Portmeirion is viewed as one of the most successful British architectural projects of the 20th century. And you’ll certainly understand why when you visit.
