Come prepared for all seasons and activities with the right clothing
In the United Kingdom, it’s not unusual to experience all four seasons in one day. So no matter the season, we’d suggest bringing a warm jumper or fleece, a waterproof jacket and good walking shoes or boots for all sorts of terrain.
An umbrella is always handy, and bird watchers may wish to bring binoculars. You may also need a UK travel adapter, which you can buy at the airport or in local shops after you arrive. For more information, read our useful electricity guide.
If you plan to spend your days out and about sightseeing, make sure you pack your camera and mobile phone, as well as chargers and extra batteries to stay connected as you go.
Summer packing tips
While summer in the UK has largely good weather, it can still be a little unpredictable so it’s worth bringing extra layers with you just in case. Our packing suggestions include:
- Shorts and t-shirts
- Sun cap and sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Eye mask to sleep
- Light gloves, hat and a scarf
- Light waterproof layers
- Good walking shoes or boots (especially if you plan to go on nature walks or hikes)
If you’re visiting Scotland on your summer UK adventure, you might encounter midges, pesky little flies that swarm near lakes and streams.
You may also encounter ticks, small spider-like insects that suck blood from animals and humans. They’re most commonly found in areas with long grass and heather.
You can help avoid bites from both by wearing long sleeves and trousers and by using insect repellent. If you’ve been in an area where ticks may be present, it’s worth checking your skin for ticks when you get back to your accommodation. They like warm areas, such as your armpits and behind your knees.
Other suggestions
We recommended bringing a small backpack for your daily essentials as you travel between accommodations. Plus, it might come in handy for an impromptu hike or picnic.
Though day-to-day attire is fairly casual in the UK, it might be smart to bring a nicer outfit (e.g., suit jackets for men, no jeans or sporting shoes) if you’re going out on the town or dining in finer establishments.
