Picturesque market town in the Peak District
The town of Bakewell is a must-see while visiting the North of England. You’ll find it in the heart of the Peak District National Park, which is nestled between the cities of Sheffield and Manchester.
During your travels, you’ll want to stop by to soak in the atmosphere of this quintessential English market town. Explore the centre to take in the traditional architecture and the green surroundings.
The town was built along the River Wye and there is a path you can follow for a relaxing riverside stroll. Along the way, you’ll pass the Love Locks Bridge as well as the 14th-century arched stone Bakewell Bridge.
Most of all, Bakewell is known for its sweet delicacy: the Bakewell pudding (and a later variation, the Bakewell tart). The dessert is made of flaky pastry with fruit jam and almond paste. While passing through the town, don’t miss your chance to taste the pudding where it was invented!
What else can you do in Bakewell? Visit the Bakewell Old House Museum (closed in winter), housed in a Tudor building of Henry VIII’s period. You could also walk up the hill to All Saints Church. In fact, you'll be able to admire its spire from a distance.
Bakewell also hosts many events throughout the year, including August’s Bakewell Show, one of England’s oldest agricultural events. Every Monday, there is a bustling outdoor market where you could browse for bargains or souvenirs.
Near Bakewell, you’ll also find plenty to do for an enchanting day in the Peak District. Haddon Hall is a stately home with 900 years of history located just south of the town.
Or stop to take in the unusual rock formation at Robin Hood’s Stride. Plus, the lavish Chatsworth House is located a 10-minute drive from Bakewell.
