English town with an impressive Norman fortress
Ludlow is a medieval market town surrounded by the Shropshire countryside near the border with Wales. Here you can expect to be charmed by the historic town centre, traditional market and impressive Ludlow Castle.
The town is famous for its food and drink offerings. You’ll be spoiled with choices of restaurants and cafés to have lunch or dinner. This is the perfect way to discover the quality produce of the region. If you visit in September, you could even attend the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival.
Take a stroll through the town centre to feel how Ludlow was as a thriving market town. The narrow lanes with cobblestones will lead you to the open-air market hosted regularly in Castle Square.
On your walk, admire half-timbered houses and classical buildings such as the Butter Cross, which houses the Ludlow Museum today.
At the other end of Castle Square, don’t miss Ludlow Castle, a Norman fortress dating back to the 11th century. It has a storied past and an imposing location overlooking the River Teme. The castle has played a key role in many eras of English history, through the medieval and Tudor periods.
Ludlow Castle is open throughout the year for a modest fee and hosts many of the city’s events.
