One of England’s first historical regions
Matlock Bath is a charming resort town set in the Derbyshire Dales right by the Peak District National Park. You’ll find it just south of the town of Matlock.
When you stop here, you can see why it's affectionately known as the ‘seaside town of Derbyshire’. That’s because Matlock Bath is reminiscent of a coastal pier with all its amenities, including fish and chips shops, outdoor seating and arcades.
On a sunny day, you might find that wandering through town is the top activity. Take a stroll along the River Derwent that snakes its way through the town. Pick up a local ice cream or some fudge to treat yourself while admiring the steep hills that rise behind the houses.
In fact, the poet Lord Byron even nicknamed Matlock Bath “Little Switzerland” thanks to its location.
Or pop over to the Heights of Abraham, a park you can reach via the local cable car. This will give you incredible views over the surroundings. With your ticket, you could even venture inside the caverns at the top of the hill.
Other highlights in the area include:
- visiting the lush Derwent Gardens
- taking your children to Gulliver’s Kingdom
- learning about the local history at the Peak District Mining Museum
- popping over to the Matlock Bath Aquarium
The neighbouring town Matlock could be another stop on your trip. Here you’ll find a larger town centre with lots of independent shops. Or explore another UNESCO World Heritage Site at the nearby Cromford Mills. It is also home to one of the Peak District’s cutest bookshops.
