Historic English town reminiscent of Germany
Shrewsbury is located in the county of Shropshire in England, just a few miles from the Welsh border. It’s a picturesque place to add to your itinerary if you want to get a feel of a medieval market town.
The town centre is sure to charm you with its cobbled high street, half-timbered buildings and independent shops. Take a stroll along Shrewsbury Square to absorb the relaxed atmosphere. Or, visit the nearby Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery to see local artefacts.
As you explore, you’ll soon find titbits of historic and cultural legacy everywhere. Near the impressive train station lies Shrewsbury Castle. Today, it’s home to the Shropshire Regimental Museum, giving you an insight into the region's military past.
Across the River Severn, which winds its way through the town, you could visit Shrewsbury Abbey. It was founded as a Benedictine monastery back in the 11th century.
The most famous inhabitant of Shrewsbury was probably naturalist Charles Darwin. He was born in the family home, The Mount, and spent much of his early life here. You’ll find his statue by the Shrewsbury Library.
If you’re looking for an oasis of relaxation, seek out The Quarry. This incredible parkland sits by the river just south of the town centre. At its heart you’ll find The Dingle, a delightful landscaped garden. Every August the park is home to the Shrewsbury Flower Show.
In summer, you could also discover Shrewsbury by boat. Hop aboard the Sabrina to cruise along the River Severn.
