Exploring the Wye Valley
Tintern is a serene Welsh village located in the heart of the Wye Valley. It is famous for being the home of Tintern Abbey (“Abaty Tyndryn” in Welsh). This is the main reason to stop in Tintern on your travels.
The abbey was founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks. It was originally built of timber before stone church and cloisters were added. At the end of the 13th century, plans were underway to build a British Gothic architectural masterpiece.
During the English Reformation in the 16th century, Tintern surrendered and slowly fell into disrepair, becoming the ruins that you can see today. Take your time to explore and be amazed by the heights of the walls that remain and the monastic heritage of the abbey.
Tintern is an ideal spot to take a break and stretch your legs while taking in some Welsh history. Here, you’re only a 15-minute drive north of the town of Chepstow, the River Severn, and onward to Bristol or Bath.
