Georgian streets and relaxing attractions
Harrogate is one of Yorkshire’s most elegant destinations. It’s been a popular holiday spot since the Georgian era, so you’ll find plenty to enjoy and explore. In the early 19th century, Harrogate became known as “The English Spa” when the local water was discovered to be rich in iron, sulphur and salt.
Here, you can wander charming streets lined by boutique shops and quaint cafés. Harrogate is often ranked the UK’s happiest place to live, so you’ll notice the friendliness of the locals. The most iconic eatery is Betty’s Tea Room where you can enjoy an authentic English cream tea.
At the Royal Pump Room Museum, learn about the history of mineral springs in Harrogate. The RHS Garden Harlow Carr offers lush grounds full of flowering beds and water features. You could even visit the Moorish-style Turkish Baths, first built in 1896, to indulge in the town’s famous waters.
Just east of Harrogate, the village of Knaresborough boasts a spectacular viaduct that can be viewed from the ruins of the Knaresborough Castle. You’ll also find a number of cosy shops and cafés here, as well as weekend markets. You can even go punting on the river under the viaduct.
