Ancient city walls and medieval streets
Wander the streets of York and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. This walled city in Northern England is bursting with history, culture and beautiful sites. Founded in 71 CE by the Romans, the city today boasts a prestigious university, modern restaurants and enchanting attractions.
Explore York’s many medieval landmarks, like The Shambles, a winding market street lined by tiny shopfronts. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, and you can discover its vast interior, stained glass windows and ancient crypt. You could also climb the Central Tower for spectacular city views.
The city’s rich history is on display in dynamic museums. At the JORVIK Viking Centre, named for York’s Old Norse name, immerse yourself in England’s Viking past. At the Castle Museum, wander through a Victorian-style street and learn how York’s society has changed.
Near to the Castle Museum, you can climb Clifford’s Tower, an ancient defensive fort. For some modern history, step into the National Railway Museum to view giant halls of exhibits. Here, you’ll see royal trains, wartime medical carriages and a tunnel section from the Eurostar.
In between taking in all the history, you can relax with any number of cultural experiences. Why not wander the tops of the walls that encircle the city? Along this route, you’ll find the incredible Micklegate Bar, an ancient gateway into York. You’ll also be rewarded with amazing views of York Minster.
Shopping in York is also well-known for its blend of modern boutiques and quirky independent stores. There’s all manner of homeware, memorabilia and clothing to buy. You won’t be short of restaurants, cafés and bars to try either, with both traditional and international cuisine on offer.
